The Covenant Reunited
.... As recorded in the gospel of Luke, the angel of the LORD was sent to the city of Nazareth, to the young virgin Mary, who was betrothed to Joseph of the House of David.
.... "Do not be afraid Mary," said he, "for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS."
(Luke 1:30,31)
.... "Now all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: 'Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,’ which is translated, 'God with us.’"
(Matthew 1:22,23)
.... " . . . Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins."
(Matt 1:20-21)
.... When the fullness of her time had come, Mary, still a virgin, gave birth to Jesus, who is called the Christ. Thus His humanity descended from David through Mary (through the lineage of David’s son Nathan,) and Mary’s part of the covenant was complete.
.... But when Jesus became the firstborn of Joseph’s house, He became his heir: born of the Seed of David in truth, yet not through Coniah, so that none of Coniah’s restrictions applied to Him. The title to the throne passed to Jesus immediately upon His birth (Matthew 2:2).
.... We have already seen that in the days of Jesus, meticulous genealogical records were kept in the temple at Jerusalem. We have also seen that His enemies resorted to those records in order to attack His claims. Yet throughout history, there has never been a record of anyone disputing the royal lineage of Joseph, or of Jesus in turn. Their silence on such an important point can only mean that no legitimate contest could be made.
.... At last the monarchy had an heir, truly of David’s seed, who could also claim his throne. All prophecies concerning both the seed and the throne of David came together in Jesus Christ at last:
.... "On that day I will raise up the tabernacle of David which has fallen down, and repair it’s damages; I will raise up it’s ruins, and rebuild it as in days of old."
(Amos 9:11)
.... "Now to you, O profane, wicked prince of Israel, whose day has come, whose iniquity shall end, thus says the Lord God: Remove the turban, and take off the crown; Nothing shall remain the same. Exalt the lowly, and abase the exalted. Overthrown, overthrown, I will make it overthrown! It shall be no longer, until He comes whose right it is, and I will give it to Him."
(Ezekiel 21:25-27)
